On July 4, 2025, H.R. 1 -2025 (known as the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act”) was signed into law, bringing changes to federal student loan options, including changes to borrowing caps and repayment plans.
Changes will take effect on July 1, 2026.
Federal student loans will remain available to eligible students. However, there will be new borrowing caps on federal loans for graduate and professional programs. Borrowing for professional programs will be limited to $50,000 per year and $200,000 total. Law school (JD program) is considered a professional program. Additional updates also include changes to repayment options.
Scholarships & private educational loan options also remain available to future law students.
