Pre-Law 101


The Pre-Law 101 workshop series is the introductory program for students at Illinois. While it is open to any pre-law student, it is particularly relevant for those in their first four semesters of study

The Pre-Law 101 workshop series provides an overview of:

  • the law as a career,
  • legal education,
  • strategies and goals for a successful pre-law plan, and
  • the process of preparing for and applying to law school.   

Pre-Law 101 is a two-part series.  Part I is a collection of on-demand webinars exploring specific aspects of the pre-law journey.  Part II is a unique, in-person Capstone Session which includes perspectives from upper-level pre-law students, law students, pre-law advisors, and more! 


Participants will begin by exploring the pre-law path through the Pre-Law 101 on-demand Webinar Series. On-demand resources include webinars on specialized topics, featuring additional resources, peer perspectives, and more.

Any individual who successfully completes the Part I – Webinar Series by the semester deadline (November/April) is eligible to attend Part II – Capstone Session (hosted in November/April).

Participants will continue their journey through a live, in-person Capstone Session. In addition to meeting peers who are also engaged in the pre-law journey, participants will have an opportunity to:

  • ask questions about the on-demand content,
  • hear perspectives from upper-level pre-law students,
  • engage with law students,
  • participate in a law school exercise using the Socratic Method,
  • hear updates from pre-law advisors,
  • and more!

FAQs

Who should participate in Pre-Law 101?

The Pre-Law 101 workshop is open to all Illinois students and alumni who have an interest in attending law school and pursuing a career in law; however, these sessions are specifically targeted toward students in their first four semesters of undergraduate study. Freshman students are highly encouraged to complete Pre-Law 101 in either the fall or spring semester of their first year on campus.

When is Pre-Law 101 offered?

Pre-Law 101 is offered in both the fall and spring semesters. It is not currently offered in the summer.

Participants who complete thePre-Law 101 – Part I Webinar series are eligible to attend the in-person, Part II – Capstone Workshop at the end of each semester (November/April). Additional details, including specific dates and deadlines for the Capstone event for the most current semester, can be found both in Canvas and on the PLAS Calendar.

Is Pre-Law 101 a course?

No, Pre-Law 101 is a voluntary, non-credit earning program for any interested pre-law student.  The program is specifically designed for freshman or sophomore students and serves as a foundational informational program for students in their first semesters of undergraduate studies.  Although it is targeted at freshman and sophomore students, any interested Illinois student may attend.

How do I enroll in Pre-Law 101?

You can enroll in Pre-Law 101 directly online or by visiting the PLAS Canvas page and clicking on the link under the Pre-Law 101 section on the home page. Registration for fall and spring will open during the first week of each semester. Registration stays open for the majority of the semester, allowing Illini to join throughout the semester. Enrollment requests are processed weekly on Fridays. Once enrolled, you will be directly added to the Pre-Law 101 program modules through Canvas.

How do I access the Pre-Law 101 program content?

Pre-Law 101 content is available through the Pre-Law Canvas page for all registered participants.  Scroll to the bottom of the Homepage to access general information.  Those enrolled in the 101 program each semester should access the “Access the Pre-Law 101 Series ” button at the bottom of the homepage to review the Part I-Webinar Series on-demand content.  To enroll in the Pre-Law 101 series, complete the online form.  Enrollments are processed throughout the semester on Fridays each week.

How do I become eligible to attend the in-person Part II – Capstone Session?

Each semester, a completion deadline for Part I – Webinar series will be posted, typically early November (fall semester) or early April (spring semester). Any individual who successfully completes the Part I – Webinar series by the deadline is eligible to attend the Part II – Capstone Session at the end of each semester. Specific semester Pre-Law 101 dates and deadlines are published in the Canvas page.

I completed the Part I -Webinar Series last semester, but was unable to attend the Capstone Session. Can I join the Capstone Session in a future semester?

Yes. You will be invited to the Capstone Session for the following semester (i.e., if you completed in fall, you will be invited in spring), and you may choose to attend if it works with your schedule. Additionally, you are not required to redo the on-demand webinars to attend (unless you want to).
